Law student and bar exam support

The months after graduating law school can be some of the most exciting, yet stressful months of your life. The elation of graduation often fades quickly into months of intense preparation and sitting for the bar exam, followed by months of waiting for the results--often while starting your first "real" legal job and navigating all the other demands of life (maybe even throwing a long-distance move or a wedding into the mix!) This can set the stage for major career burnout. Here's what I've noticed:

• Most bar exam prep courses focus solely on the substantive legal knowledge necessary to pass the exam, but there are very few programs dedicated to the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual/energetic aspects of this endeavor so that you not only pass the bar exam successfully, but so that you can also begin your legal career as the healthiest and best version of yourself. While there are lots of wonderful holistic practitioners and coaches out there, very few are also practicing attorneys who have been exactly where you are and who can fully relate to the challenges you are facing.

• There is very little "after care" offered post-bar exam. Most programs are focused solely on getting you through the exam--and then you're on your own to decompress and deal with lingering anxiety and doubts until results are released, all while navigating a new job or job search. There is also a lack of structured support after results are released, in the event that the outcome is not what you hoped for. 

• There is immense pressure to pass the bar exam on the first try. Repeat takers who did not pass on their first attempt benefit greatly from techniques to rebuild confidence and resilience and to overcome negative self-talk and doubt.

• Many law firms and other employers assume that brand-new attorneys are starting work fresh and full of energy, when the truth is that most law students and recent graduates are already struggling with burnout before they even start practicing law--which is no surprise considering that many law school graduates have been academic overachievers their entire lives, sometimes having completed other advanced degrees and worked in other industries prior to attending law school. Support during the first few months of law practice (especially while awaiting bar exam results) is critical to both heal and prevent burnout from worsening.
